Speaker Bios & Program Descriptions

Pre-Conference Speaker: Deb Chisholm, M.Ed.,CMC

Me Power: The Power2Be Be you. Be real. Be your true self.

Me Power: The Power2Be concepts develop and support students’ understanding of the positive power they all have, the power dynamics of bullying, and gives them the tools to hold on to their power by responding from their hearts with conviction.  This program also provides a clear structure for adults processing bullying situations with the victim and the bully.  This process recognizes that both are hurting,  needing to be heard and supported – thus it is a process that is strongly aligned with a restorative justice approach.

Me Power: ThePower2Be is simple (yet powerful!) and fluid, thus the concepts and skills can readily and easily integrated with mandated programs and curriculum.

In this presentation, Deb will provide an overview of Me Power, and share some of the “real-life stories” from kids and teachers about how meaningful Me Power has been for them.

This program for empowering students is different.  Me Power: The Power2Be was created by Deb Chisholm, M.Ed., CMC to help students understand both positive and negative dynamics in their friendships, particularly in terms of power, and to realize the positive power each one of them possesses. Social situations that had been faced primarily by early adolescents have crept into the social milieu of younger children, and, as concrete thinkers, understanding the power dynamics of popularity, peer pressure and bullying for them is very difficult.

Keynote Speaker:
Christian Moore
"Building Resilience in Students, Teachers & Schools"

Want to engage even the most struggling youth?  Learn 10 strategies proven to build relationships, grab attention, and inspire teens and children alike. These strategies have helped over 1.5 million youth gain social and emotional life skills in 16,000 K-12 schools, mental health, and correctional organizations worldwide. Researchers have seen positive changes using these 10 strategies in areas of school climate, academic success, dropout prevention, classroom management, and bullying prevention. Be engaged through visual metaphors, videos, music, and physical activities. All levels of expertise are welcome. Participants will receive a handout outlining the 10 strategies and a link to a sample lesson.

When WhyTry Founder Christian Moore became a social worker, he discovered that the youth he was working with at a local alternative high school were having a difficult time retaining the principles they were being taught.  He soon realized why: the majority of these students were visual learners.  Christian started drawing pictures that represented the concepts the youth needed to learn, and was excited to find they were actually paying attention. Thousands of school districts across the U.S. have had Christian consult on how to lower dropout, improve school climate, prevent bullying, lower the achievement gap, and improve academics through teaching social and emotional education to all students. Christian speaks at over 100 education events a year, including conferences such as National Alternative Education Association Conference, LDA International Conference, National Association of Social Workers Conferences, National Conference on School Discipline, and Best Practices Forum on Dropout Prevention.

Speaker: Amanda Chambers
"NoteCounselor"

School Counselors know that accountability is a requirement. What we do is important; it is important that we can demonstrate out talents. NoteCounselor is a secure database that makes it easy for school counselors to save counseling notes and makes demonstrating accountability as simple as clicking a button. NoteCounselor is accessible and essential for today’s school counselors. It has become a standard accountability tool for over ten thousand school systems already, and has been featured in ASCA School Counselor magazine. Why create more work for yourself? You can use NoteCounselor to show stakeholders what you are doing without creating additional work.

NoteCounselor is an online application that is accessible from any computer or mobile device. No special software is required. You do note need to install NoteCounselor onto your computer. It is a sole possession note taking system. It is not a part of a student’s educational record. It is a memory aide to increase your effectiveness. You are in control of how brief or how detailed you feel you should be. There is nothing to install. Uploading students is easier than ever. There is no set-up required at the beginning of the year.

Amanda (Mandy) Chambers works as a middle school counselor and has spent six years at the high school level. Before her first school counseling job, she created a database to store her counseling notes. Interest in the database grew to colleagues and friends and evolved into NoteCounselor.

Elementary/Middle Speaker: Rebecca Lallier
"CareerSmarts: Exploring the Future"

Career Smarts
is a student-driven, technology-based unit which connects students’ multiple intelligences and interests with future education and career possibilities. While on the CareerSmarts journey, students learn about their own multiple intelligences; explore and analyze their choice of careers through video, search engine, and games; interview guests at Career Day; create an avatar of themselves in their future career; and more! CareerSmarts is aligned with ASCA and Common Core standards.

Middle/ High School Speaker: Nichole Lentine
"College Research & Social Media"

This session will cover a selection of the multitude of social media websites that are currently available to students and admissions offices alike. We will cover why these tools can be valuable in a college or career search throughout a student’s educational history. We will highlight some websites that have been developed particularly for this purpose, as well as the most common ones that students tend to use – Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and others. In addition, the session will cover suggestions about what students should and shouldn’t post online, what admission counselors take into consideration from these sites when making application decisions, and the importance of holding one’s self accountable to information posted and shared online. There will also be time for questions and discussions about concerns in this area.

Nicole Lentine is a Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Champlain College, as well as the primary social media coordinator for the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Nicole has been in Admissions for six years, and has been working with social media for the last four years. Outside of Champlain, Nicole has also been an occasional panelist and guest host on the weekly web show Admissions Live, hosted by Ashley Hennigan of Cornell University, and has spoken about successful social media usage on this show to share with other admissions offices across the US.
